May 11, 2010 · Windows OS( XP,VISTA,WINDOWS 7) uses a special assembly called 'mrp.dll". mpr.dll is a module containing functions that are used to handle communication between the Windows operating system and the installed network providers. This assembly basically takes care of the relation between Drive Name Versus the Network Path. This is not a "Srvany thing" — by default, Windows Services do not have access to mapped drive letters. UNC paths (which look like "\\Server\Path") should be fully accessible, but if using them is not an option this answer discusses some ways to make mapped drives available in the context of a Windows Service.

The UNC doesn't work because the users need read-access to each folder in the UNC path in order to traverse the path. Mapping to the end-point doesn't require this. (The access-rights on the parent folders are not evaluated in this case.

The person setting up the job will not necessarily be the same person who runs the job and that the job will not be ran on the same machine so I need to keep the path in UNC format. I can get the user to "see" the network when the FolderBrowserDialog runs by pointing the route folder at the desktop folder.

Windows 10 became more securely, so you can't access sysvol & netlogon shares via UNC paths. To resolve this issue run gpedit.msc, go to Computer -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Network Provider -> Hardened UNC Paths, enable the policy and click "Show" button.
